The Legend of the Christmas Pickle
The Christmas pickle brings lots of holiday cheer,
Starting a tradition that will last year after year,
Hide it well on Christmas Eve night,
Tucked in the tree, out of sight.
When Christmas morning comes and you all do arise,
The first one to find it will get a surprise.
A year full of luck is the reward you will see,
Along with a treat under the Christmas tree! The Christmas Pickle: A Dill-lightful Holiday Tradition
Every Christmas tree has its shiny stars and twinkling lights, but according to a quirky tradition, somewhere among the tinsel hides something unexpected: a Christmas pickle.
How the Tradition Works
The pickle ornament is traditionally the last decoration hung on the tree late on Christmas night, tucked away while everyone else is sleeping. On Christmas morning, the first person to spot the hidden pickle earns an extra gift and good luck for the year ahead. It’s a fun way to encourage family members to relish all the ornaments before diving into the present-opening frenzy.
The Mysterious Origins
The true origins of this tradition are a bit muddled, and possibly brined in marketing genius. Several legends circulate about where the Christmas pickle came from, but the most likely explanation is that a clever 19th-century salesperson invented the “German pickle legend” to sell more imported glass ornaments. If that’s true, we have to applaud the creativity. Talk about a relish-worthy campaign!
Another popular legend involves a Civil War soldier story. According to this tale, a starving Union soldier of German descent was captured during the war. On Christmas Eve, a sympathetic guard gave him a pickle, which helped him survive his ordeal. After his release, the grateful soldier began hanging a pickle on his tree each year to preserve the memory of his survival.
A more obscure version links the tradition to the legend of St. Nicholas. In this story, St. Nicholas rescued two boys who had been placed in a pickle barrel by an evil innkeeper, making the pickle a symbol of miraculous salvation.
A Lesson in Creative Thinking
We like to think there’s a valuable lesson hidden in the Christmas pickle story. In business and in life, success often comes from seeing things differently and finding unexpected ideas hidden among the ordinary. Sometimes it’s a flash of creative brilliance, sometimes it’s a happy accident, and sometimes it’s a pickle disguised as a problem that turns into the perfect solution.
That 19th-century salesperson saw an opportunity where others might have seen just another ornament. They created a story that captured people’s imaginations and turned it into a tradition that families still enjoy today. Whether the tale is true or not, it demonstrates the power of clever thinking and storytelling.
Start Your Own Tradition
This season, we’re raising a toast (and maybe a pickle spear) to the power of creative thinking, preserving traditions, and stories that make people smile. The Christmas pickle reminds us that the best traditions don’t always have to be ancient or authentic. They just need to spark joy and bring people together.
So join in the fun! Hang a pickle on your tree this year, or start your own unique holiday ritual. After all, the best family traditions are the ones you create together.
May your holidays be dill-lightful, and your new year be kind of a big dill!
