29 Apr Pensacola Interstate Fair donates $30,000 in college grants to Escambia and Santa Rosa County students

April 29, 2016 –The Pensacola Interstate Fair, Inc. has given out a total of $30,000 for the 2015-2016 John E. Frenkel, Sr. Educational Grants.

This grant provides $1,000 each to 30 recipients, made payable to any accredited college. Since the inception of the grant program in 1983, Pensacola Interstate Fair, Inc. has given over $1 million to local students.

These grants are restricted to graduating high school seniors of Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties who have participated in or volunteered at the Pensacola Interstate Fair during their high school years.

About the Scholarship Program

For decades, The Pensacola Interstate Fair has generously provided unrestricted educational funds to Pensacola State College and to the University of West Florida. In 1983, a special grants program was initiated. These grants were restricted to members of Future Farmers of America, 4-H Clubs and Future Homemakers of America who were graduating high school seniors and who had been actively involved in the presentation of exhibits, projects and displays at the Fair during their high school years. It was a sincere attempt to reward those who had contributed to the success of the Fair each year and who wished to continue their education with the assistance and encouragement of the Fair. The program was well received and several young men and women were able to complete their first year of college as the first Interstate Fair Educational Grants Recipients.

1984 marked the 50th year of the Fair, which had grown from its humble beginnings in 1935 to a position of prominence throughout the United States. To properly celebrate this Golden Anniversary event, the Board of Directors approved a measure to substantially increase grant funding as a special tribute to John Frenkel, Sr., the founder, former General Manager and late Chairman of the Board of Directors.

The JOHN E. FRENKEL, SR. – Educational Grants Program was established to honor his lifelong dedication to education, his outstanding contributions to our community and his many years of devotion and leadership to the Pensacola Interstate Fair, Inc. That year, a larger number of grants were made available, broadening the base to include students previously ineligible to apply. In addition, several new categories were created to assist students pursuing undergraduate and graduate programs at Pensacola Junior College (now Pensacola State College) and at the University of West Florida.
